Shifting by Degrees was conceived as a way to simplify the teaching of positions on the violin. The "degree" concept allows for greater accuracy in finger placement.
The book focuses on 5th Degree (3rd position) in combination with 2nd Degree (1st position). I have isolated each of the four strings and created excercises for it. Each excercise is followed by one or more pieces applying the material learned.
At the same time, I wrote accompaniments for all the excercises and pieces. These serve two purposes. They are an aid to continuity and rhythmic accuracy in performance. The accompaniments also provide a rich harmonic background, which appeals to students and audience alike.
The final section is a set of four longer compositions, each one focusing on the G, D, A or E string.
